Something To Think About While Tailgating

This is a blog written by my coworker Garrett Guzman. Thought y'all might like it since we are all die hard football junkies!

Clients,

This week, I would like to draw attention to how closely nutrition ties in with our resistance and cardiovascular training programs. So often when I discuss the importance of nutrition, I think many of you continue to believe that you can earn better results through cardiovascular training alone (and more and more of it). And, in no way am I knocking cardio, as I know the lengthy benefits it provides. However, I would like to make one point very clear: there is absolutely NO amount of cardio that will improve a poor diet. Not only does a poor diet wreak havoc on our overall metabolism, but it also increases the likelihood of nearly every illness and disease known to man. I cannot stress the importance of a healthy nutrition plan!

Having said all this, I realize that there is a very important time that is coming up in all of our lives (more important for some than others): football season. With the beginning of this beautiful season, there also come hot dogs and bratwursts, potato chips and ranch dip, beer and margaritas. Needless to say, the options aren’t typically nutritiously sound. And for that reason, I would like to share with you some equivalency factors for various foods with regards to the amount of exercise it would take to burn it off. As previously mentioned, this simply gives you the information on the calories in versus calories out, not the overall negative effects it has on our metabolism and health. Anyhow, for fun – and a closer look into the caloric damage, I have decided to share.

All of the listings below were gathered from SparkPeople website, and the activity is based on the average caloric burn using a 185 pound male. Therefore, if you weigh less, you are burning even fewer calories and would need even more exercise.

2 Hot Dogs/Buns: 536 calories (30 grams of fat) =
Over 45 minutes of speed skating in the ice rink (emphasis on speed, like Apollo Ohno)

2 Bratwurst/Buns: 680 calories (41 grams of fat) =
Over 90 minutes of laborious farm work (although I have only dabbled with this one; truly not that enjoyable)

Half Pound Cheeseburger: 700 calories (37 grams of fat) =
Approximately 60 minutes of the Gazelle with Tony Little (truly not worth the cheeseburger to have to watch this guy for an hour)

Potato Chips/Ranch Dip (2 servings): 440 calories (30 grams of fat) =
Over 60 minutes of rump-shaking belly-dancing (Marisa Tomei swears by it)

Corn Chips/Cheese Dip (2 servings): 440 calories (26 grams of fat) =
Over 2 hours of non-stop dart throwing (please use blunt tips for safety)

2 Pepsis (12 oz): 300 calories (82 grams of sugar) =
Approximately 60 minutes of balls-to-the-wall ping pong (All takers: bring it!)

3 Budweisers (12 oz): 435 calories =
Over 60 minutes of line dancing (I think Budweiser and line dancing are always connected with one another)

2 Margaritas (12 oz): 1,112 calories (32 grams of sugar) =
Over 2 hours and 30 minutes of non-stop lawn-mowing (no, not on a nice John Deere riding mower)

Thanks and enjoy!
